I wonder if that was actually his bike? So sad that it happened at all, but what a fitting memorial.

I doubt that was his bike. The local bike groups do something called a "ghost bike" whenever a cyclist is killed, to draw attention to the fact that motorists need to be more careful and share the road with cyclists. It definitely gives anyone (who bothers to stop and look) something to think about.

Amen. I have a friend who has never learned to drive, and who lives in a suburban area. He rides his bike everywhere, and he's been in accidents three times because of careless motorists. We keep our fingers crossed for him -- at this point he'll never learn to drive (he's about 45, and very conservative, in the sense of being very resistant to change) and we never know when we're going to get a phone call telling us Billy's in the hospital again. I don't know how it is in the city, but in the 'burbs around Philadelphia, there is no provision made for cyclists, and a lot of motorists just don't pay attention.
