Silver Lining

So I went to a cattle-call, otherwise known as a job fair, this morning. I arrived at 11:30. I got in TWO HOURS LATER, as the line stretched around the block. When I got in there, a small room with a maximum of 15 companies greeted me. Most of the companies were looking for sales people, and sales is not in my skillset. Even Avon was there, for pete's sake! I got one potential lead from a company in Jersey City that is looking for technical support people, and a couple more leads I will pursue at the companies' websites. But overall, it was a whole lot of standing around in uncomfortable shoes for nothing...
Except at the end, on my way out, another underwhelmed job-seeker started a conversation with me. Before we parted ways, I had given her the contact information for the 3 temp agencies I am registered with, plus my own business card, so she can tell them who sent her. (And you never know: she or someone she knows may be in the market for some photos.) She was very grateful for my help. Knowing I helped someone else made the experience worthwhile.
But that does not mean I will ever set foot at another job fair!
