Courage is what makes us go against the grain, what makes us get past, "I wish I...," and move into, "I am." It is what inspired one of my sisters to write that novel she has always wanted to write, to prove to herself she can finish what she starts. It is what inspired another of my sisters to go back to school, despite being treated as though she is worthless by those she should have been able to depend on for support and encouragement. It is what moved me from wishing I could handle 25-mile bike rides to having two under my belt in less than a month.

Courage is doing what needs to be done, despite feelings of fear or discouragement or isolation or discomfort. Despite being put off. Despite being told you can't. Despite not being taken seriously, whether by yourself or by others. Despite being told that is not "normal" for your race, sex, nationality, age, family of origin, or religion (just to name a few things people sometimes use to discount your goals).

I enjoy having courageous women in my life. They inspire me to be courageous, too.
