Dragon Dance, originally uploaded by wlotus.

Chinese New Year Parade in NYC's Chinatown. 10 February 2008.

I've finally figured out how to make a photo black and white, except for selected areas. :-)

Awesome picture.

Is it hard to do that (making part of it black & white)?

It's really quite simple. Paste the photo on top of itself as two separate layers. Make the bottom layer black & white. Then simply erase the top layer, except for the part(s) you want to keep in color. I read about it on www.flickr.com. I had thought it was far more complicated than that, but as is probably typical for an engineer, I was overthinking things. :-)

If you are using photoshop, you can also outline the part of the picture you want to stay colored, then select the opposite (effectively now picking up what you want to be black and white) and make the new selection b/w.

Nice effect.

You could also use the clone stamp tool to get rid of the person's head in front of the dragon.

Er...and if you are not using photoshop, never mind. ;)

Your photography is just getting better and better.

Thanks!

I use Arcsoft PhotoStudio, but I have the ability to do cloning in that, too. I thought about cloning out the lady's head, but after spending a couple of hours erasing the color around the edge of the dragon, I wasn't in the mood to carefully clone pixels to make it look like the dragon's pattern was unbroken. I may experiment with that later, as a challenge.

WOW...the colors really pop with the black and white background. That is truly gorgeous.
