Subject: Teaching Our Children Hatred

By canceling the senior prom rather than opening it to same-sex couples, you have taught our young people a valuable lesson. You have taught them they can use whatever power and authority they gain as they enter adulthood to practice hatred towards those who are different from them.

Is that the lesson you want these young people to take away from their senior year?

On the other hand, you can choose to teach them that sometimes people in authority make mistakes, own up to their mistakes, and reverse their mistakes. The ball is in your court.

Sincerely,

That's an ugly lesson, but an accurate one. People are treated as if they have no legal rights before they are 18, unless they can get an adult to speak for them. After that, their rights are frequently trampled unless they get a lawyer to speak for them.

Welcome to America. Now fuck off, you faggot hippie pinko pagan nigger ... whatever.

No wonder young people don't respect their elders. It's hard to find any worthy of respect. More like, take two big steps awayyy from the crazy person.

We do such ugly things to one another and then justify it, don't we? That is why speaking out against things like this is so important. It won't change the entire world, but it will help one more person get treated more fairly, and that makes it worth it. Even if this school doesn't improve its policy, someone somewhere is touched enough by the story to do (or continue to do) the right thing by their students.

Did you see the Wanda Sykes show last night? She had the girl on, via video screen and invited her to present the GLAAD award Wanda is being awarded. The girl is so sweet. Not sure if its on youtube...

I didn't see the show, but that was a wonderful gesture. I'm glad the story is getting national attention. I hope it pressures the school board to do the right thing by all of its students.

I saw this young woman on Wanda Sykes show. Can you believe we're still having this "discussion" in 2010??

As a progressive thinker, no, I cannot believe we are still having this "discussion" in 2010. It is as ridiculous and maddening to me as it would be, if we were still "discussing" whether people of African descent should be given all of the same rights and privileges as other people in this country.

As someone who recognizes human beings are often guilty of projecting and justifying their personal beliefs and biases in such a way that it oppresses others, I am not the least bit surprised we are still having this "discussion".
