"The rise of social media has made it easier than ever to keep in touch with friends, relatives and coworkers. With a few keystrokes you can reconnect with an old high school buddy, learn what your coworker’s favorite band is, or play Scrabble with a friend who lives on the other side of the globe.

"But while increased connectivity is an undeniably good thing, you can just as easily use it to annoy the living hell out of everyone you know. This is the internet, after all, and if something on the internet can be used in an annoying way, you can safely assume that 99% of the population will proceed to do so (go try reading a comment on YouTube if you don’t believe me).

"People need rules to tell them how to act. Luckily I went to the top of Mount Internet last night, and God handed me down these 10 Commandments of Facebook for all to obey. Follow them or you’ll go to hell."

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear!

LOL

Y'know the first blush of facebook has worn off, and the constant barrage of notifications and such has struck me as insane. I don't need to take a "how alike are we" quiz thankyouverymuch and I don't need 10 "growing gifts" all from one person, none of which seem to have anything purpose than to send something.

I've taken to only using a few apps, and never sending the invitations to people I don't think would either appreciate it or I don't know already has it (except for the kidnapping thing, that one I tested out on a bunch of folk and narrowed it to 2-3 people that actually play it. Now I'm ignoring the latest notification cuz I don't feel like bothering with it anymore).

I am glad for facebook though. It got me back in touch with a great friend from HS. A second peripherally (no conversation, but at least I know he's alive now), but one on several hour+ phone call basis, and that to me is a treasure worth all the crazy facebook apps and gifts and pokes around.

You are so right. When I first joined, I told people I don't use the apps, so don't send notifications. People sent them anyway. Rather than getting aggravated, I simply delete all notifications when they arrive. I use the site for personal and political networking, and now that I'm job-hunting and learning how to network professionally, I am questioning whether to post links to articles of interest, as many employers will search Facebook to get an idea of what kind of person you are.

I could never get into Facebook. I finally deleted my account a month ago. I was briefly a Myspace addict, but the frequent browser crashes and site glitches quickly killed that.

The interface annoyed the snot out of me when I first started using it. Now I just use it to share articles of interest and keep in touch with friends and family who use the site a lot.

The internet Luddite here (by the way, ain't libraries wunnerful? AT&T *still* can't get it right). After watching people use LiveJournal as a reward-and-punishment system, and after reading this list of commandments, I think I'm just as glad I'm not on Facebook. The internet makes me crazy enough as is.

I've been thinking of you! I hope AT&T gets off their duffs and straightens things out. Sheesh...how hard can it be?

We loves libraries. Yes we do, precious. :-)

"Reward-and-punishment system..." Yes, that is a good description of how people use it. I have used it that way, sometimes, though I have tried not to use it that way. I try not to take LJ that seriously, for goodness' sake.
