"Your parents told you to wear that hat and gloves, didn't they?" I asked as he shivered his way onto the bus in front of me. He smiled and, ignoring the 5 minutes he spent waiting, said they did, but the bus "was already here."

Kids' sense of time is incredibly fluid when it suits them.

Hey! He is holding his gloves and scarf in his hand! Why doesn't he put them on?

Oh, I can see Wolfling in this conversation!

"I'm fine!" she always says brightly when I strongly suggest that she put on a raincoat or get a hat before we go out into wet and/or cold weather. Give her credit: she knows she can't complain later. . .

I realized early on that the appropriate response to this is, "You don't have to wear them, but 1) you must take them with you just in case, and 2) don't complain to me later if you're wet/cold/hot/whatever."

The only exception is sunscreen, which is non-optional. None of us has red hair, but three of us have red-head skin -- NotSoLittleAnyMore! is practically frickin' transparent. I do NOT like nursemaiding sunburn, so sunscreen is a requirement whether they like it or not.

It reminds me of one winter a number of years ago when high schoolers thought going to school in shorts and short-sleeved shirts, sans coats, was the best idea. Living one block from the high school we saw plenty of them running from their homes to the school trying to stay warm. The below zero days were the ones when I really worried about them cuz they were still dressing for +70 weather. Some people just have to learn the hard way.
