Today was cool and damp, with misting rain off and on through the afternoon. T and I holed up in Barnes & Noble at Union Square for a couple of hours after an errand on the upper east side. When we headed to the subway, we were surprised to find a freshly-completed sand mandala on the ground!

The work was done by the talented Joe Mangrum.

This mandala took about three hours for him to complete. At the end of the day, he sweeps up the sand and goes on his way. He calls this symbol a reflection of himself and finds the process of creating it meditative.

I'm now following him on Twitter, so I can visit more of his art installations as he creates them.

As beautiful as the sand art is, I'm more impressed by this man's willingness to simply share something so wonderful with everyone for no other reason than to share it.

What a beautiful *man* and what amazingly lovely photos, babe.

That is gorgeous. I've only seen sand mandalas in person once - during an exhibit at the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill. I remember being struck with how perfectly symmetrical the mandalas were, given the medium.

That is gorgeous. I could definitely see how meditative that could be, focusing on something so intricate...too bad no one can like, frame that. (Except maybe just buy one of your photos ;))

Wow. Stunning.

I love it that people- in general- respect this kind of street art- and don't go scuffing through it- as they would have every right to do.

One man, intent on his phone, nearly walked through it until Joe said, "Watch your step!" It was pretty funny to see the guy's reaction when he looked down and saw what he nearly walked right through.
