I Wish

I wish I wouldn't so often look at who other people are, what other people do, and what other people have and wish my life looked like theirs. I would like to consistently be happy with who I am, what I do, and what I have. I'm not talking about understandably wanting to improve aspects of my life as my needs and desires change; I am talking about comparing myself to others and always finding myself wanting, no matter how much I evolve.

Then again, that may be a normal, life-long struggle, not just for me, but for a lot of people. It may not be realistic to expect myself to never feel that way. It may be more realistic to understand those feelings will come up, yet still strive to appreciate my unique self rather than comparing myself to others.

I'm pretty sure you're right. How many times have I read articles about famous people who are considered "beautiful" who have the same insecurities about aspects of their looks that countless other people have? No matter what you have, you will have insecurities in one area or another.

[livejournal.com profile] smplmn once saw an interview with a very high-powered fashion model who said that she'd seen a really beautiful woman on a magazine cover, wondered who it was, and looked inside, only to discover that it was a picture of her. She didn't recognize herself.

I think we generally don't share our fears, insecurities, worries, or bad fortune. As a result, what we see in others is pretty much sunny-side-up, and we don't recognize that.

That's something I forget, too: most people keep their fears et al to themselves, particularly in the public version of this medium.

That is why I like blogging both sides. I'll blog the fears and frustrations and someone will say, "I felt that, too!" It helps us feel less alone in our struggles.
